It was bound to happen. And even though it expected it to happen, when it did it still make me smile. Someone has made available a GUi for the GUIless version of Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 Core.

Now that VDI is taking off more and more, chances are that somewhere along the line some CIO will ask you a question equivalent to "OK, okI get it, so all this VDI sounds great but what's in it for me?" This is where he starts to hurl TLA at you like TCO, ROI, TEI and many more. So before you start telling him to STFU, relax and read the rest of this post.

Citrix has announced they have collaborated with HP to provide a bare-metal version of Citrix XenServer that can be bought as a factory option with selected HP Proliant servers. This solution is referred to as Citrix XenServer HP Select Edition. As an added Bonus, HP made an official slip of the tongue that Microsoft is developing a embedded Hypervisor (based on Hyper-V) as well!

It's no secret that Microsoft wants everybody to buy Software Assurance on their products. One of the biggest lures that Microsoft has to accomplish (or at least what I think is the biggest lure) is MDOP (Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack). What it costs you and what it brings you tends to amount to a difficult answer to a seemingly simple question.

Sun is out to shine their light on the VDI market as well. They have just announced that they have released version 2.0 of their VDI product (or rather their broker) simply called Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software 2.0.

Depending on the way you deploy your virtual desktops in VDI environments, you still need to have some kind of updating / patch strategy. Whether it be patching "the golden image" or "subscribed desktops" there's still and Windows OS to maintain. Virtual machines that are offline or suspended usually pose a challenge.

My soon to be colleague Patrick Rouse has written an article on how to configure Desktop Services in the Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite (VAS) Enterprise Edition. Desktop Services is the name for the VDI component of the Virtual Access Suite Enterprise Edition.

The Inquirer has an interesting article up that mentions that it appears (important choice of verb) that Dell will sell their servers with Vmware Server ESX 3i without any additional cost. I feel that this rumor might have been slightly misinterpreted by the community but this could have a huge effect.

Yesterday I received an email from a Microsoft press person. I've never had Microsoft contact me directly to inform me of an acquisition they had made but it was worth it: Microsoft has announced that they will acquire Kidaro, one of the pioneers of offline virtual desktop solutions.
