Application Characteristics Softgrid Can Not Deal With
Saturday, 29 September 2007 by Michel Roth
Yet another great article by at the Softgrid team blog. This time around the are answering a question that I get asked a lot. This is the kind of question that you need to have answered before you start sequencing applications. The question of course is: What applications can I not sequence using Softgrid?

Well, once you know it's really easy. The following kinds of apps simply can not be sequenced:
• Applications that need MAPI virtualization
• Applications that use COM+.
• Applications that install boot-time services.
• Applications that install and rely on a system-level driver
• COM DLL surrogate virtualization, i.e. DLL’s that run in Dllhost.exe.
• Applications with licensing enforcement tied to machine, e.g. the license is tied to the system’s MAC address.

The last one needs a bit of clarification. These kinds of application usually can be sequenced, it's just that the resulting virtual application is useless because it can only be used on the machine that the license corresponds to.

The Softgrid team provides many more details in their article so be sure to check it out.
