Best Practices For Creating Templates in A VDI Environment
Monday, 27 October 2008 by Michel Roth
One of the biggest advantages of the concept of VDI is the extreme ease and speed with which you can provision new desktops. This "feature" in all products depends on some kind of template. I guess it goes without saying that extreme care should go into the creation of this template. This is a detailed document that lists best practices for creating such a template.

This whitepaper details the Quest best practices for creating a VDI Windows XP template in a VMware Virtual Center environment. It is extremely detailed and has the best practices that we use in it. Note that even though this document was specifically written for use of a VMware Windows XP template in a Virtual Access Suite infrastructure, with some common sense it can be "ported" for use in other environments. Included in this whitepaper is information to assist in reducing your Windows XP footprint and to apply best practices to the Windows XP configuration for improved performance, manageability, and reliability of your VDI environment. Since computer environments can vary from one organization to another, it is recommended that all best practices listed in this document be tested in your test VDI environment to ensure that it is helps and not hinder your VDI solution. Some of the subjects covered in this 81 page whitepaper are:

  • nLite Usage
  • Windows XP Template Installation
  • Windows Update / Patches
  • NTFS Permissions
  • VMware Tools
  • Provision Networks Tools (PNTools)
  • User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (UPH Clean)
  • Performance Options
  • Microsoft Firewall Settings
  • Applications
  • Print Server settings
  • Disable unnecessary services
  • Files and Folders cleanup
  • System Restore
  • RDP Policy Settings
  • Hardware Acceleration
  • Drive Defragmentation
  • Windows Indexing Service
  • Windows XP Registry tweaks
  • Virtual Machine "hardware" configuration
The whitepaper is available for registration free download from the Quest Provision Networks division blog.
