Citrix Support Article On Delayed Application Launch
Wednesday, 06 December 2006 by Michel Roth
Citrix has published an knowlegdebase article on delayed application launches in Presentation Server 4.0. This is when an initial application launches with a delay of several seconds, while subsequent applications launch quickly.

This is because, by default, Presentation Server 4.0 is attempting to connect autocreated client network printers directly to the print server. If network printers are unavailable (that is, switched off), a delay occurs as the server is attempting to connect directly.

When failing, the server falls back to connect indirectly as client printers. For subsequent launches within the same session, the settings for print job routing already set with the first application is inherited and therefore, no delay occurs.

Printers are often a suspect in Terminal Server environments in circumstances like the aforementioned. For example, Microsoft Word always checks for the availability of the default printer. In case there's something wrong with this, significant delays can occur.
