Creating A Internet Explorer Safe Browsing Appliance

Andrew Dugdell has prepared a how-to on how to create an Internet Explorer safe browsing appliiance, as an alternative to VMWare's player (except that you need a licensed copy of Virtual PC and Windows XP).

[color=darkblue]Building the VM[/color]:
• Default XP Install with all the patches
• Install latest Virtual Machine Additions
• Install Flash and Quicktime
• System Properties | Best Performance
• Enable Silent boot in BIOS
• Custom Boot.bmp
• Enable AutoLogin
• Disable Screen Saver
• Open a https page and acknowledge assorted IE prompts
• Run through Windows Validation
• Set home page to favourite search engine
• Change the Internet Explorer to include a reference to 'Safe Browser' window title as per KB176497
• Defrag Guest Harddisk and compact the VHD
• Disable CD and Floppy Disk

[color=darkblue]Presenting it to the User:[/color]
• Power down and enable undo disks
• Change the Close option to "Automatically close without a message and: Turn off and delete changes"
• Create a shortcut to the Guest using: Virtual PC.exe" -pc "Safe Explorer" -launch -singlepc -quiet
