The subject of running ESX in VMware Workstation has been a lively one to say the least. Some versions of Vmware Workstation did allow you to run ESX in Vmware Workstation while succesors to that version might not allow it (anymore). And if it did allow it, performance often was so horrible it would make you want to stop trying all together. But rejoice, it is possible (again) to run ESX in Vmware Workstation.
Sometimes it seemed like VMware
was reluctant to allow ESX to be run in VMware Workstation because they were
afraid that if this would become to popular it would damage the performant and
stable image of ESX. Now it sees like VMware has seen the light in the sense
that this is not a realistic concern. People that run ESX inside Vmware
Workstatation do so to try ESX (with other products). I, for example, sometimes
use it in my work to test new version of the Virtual Access Suite and it's
integration with ESX.
The biggest contributor to this
re-enablement of running ESX in Vmware Workstation is the new version that just
got released. Vmware Workstation 6.5. This version makes it even rather easy to
do so. Now I could go on and with a lengthy and boring article about this but
David Davis has created a step-by-step webcast that shows you exactly how to do
it, so I suggest you
read that.
