Hot: Citrix To Launch Application Streaming (Project Tarpon)
Tuesday, 11 October 2005 by Michel Roth
Today, Templeton demonstrated, for the first time, Project “Tarpon” — breakthrough future technology under development that will change the game for delivering desktop applications by eliminating the traditional installation of desktop applications. Tarpon streams applications to a fully isolated environment on the desktop and allows users to play those applications on demand. Project Tarpon will eliminate application compatibility issues found when installing software on the desktop with traditional software distribution methods. Tarpon delivers advancements in application profiling and publishing, run-time isolation, and progressive downloading and caching.

Traditional software distribution creates an application installation package that is “pushed” to and installed on each desktop, saving the time and cost of physically touching every PC. But, because they’re installed on the OS, the apps can lead to installation complexity and compatibility issues, risking inter-application conflict that requires extensive regression testing, app tuning, and customization.

Project Tarpon, debuted at Citrix iForum 2005, is an Application Streaming technology that uses a “pull-based” model for application deployments and updates. Leveraging application run-time isolation and using what Citrix calls “application profiling” Tarpon lets “profiles” applications to publish new applications or applications updates, and to “play” applications on-demand in an isolated environment, even when offline.
