Traditional software distribution creates an application installation package that is “pushed” to and installed on each desktop, saving the time and cost of physically touching every PC. But, because they’re installed on the OS, the apps can lead to installation complexity and compatibility issues, risking inter-application conflict that requires extensive regression testing, app tuning, and customization. Project Tarpon, debuted at Citrix iForum 2005, is an Application Streaming technology that uses a “pull-based” model for application deployments and updates. Leveraging application run-time isolation and using what Citrix calls “application profiling” Tarpon lets “profiles” applications to publish new applications or applications updates, and to “play” applications on-demand in an isolated environment, even when offline.
