Microsoft Windows Fundamentals Is Now Available
Thursday, 13 July 2006 by Michel Roth
According to a Microsoft Press release: "Continuing the March 2006 rollout of 18 new and enhanced Software Assurance benefits, Microsoft Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs is now available to Software Assurance customers. Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs extends the security and stability of Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 to legacy PCs and eases the transition to Windows Vista™ Enterprise."

As Microsoft announced in September, Windows Fundamentals is being made available as part of Microsoft's Software Assurance licensing program. It's one of several changes Microsoft is making to the program.

Formerly known by its Eiger code name, Windows Fundamentals gives those PCs some of the security benefits of XP but essentially turns the machines into thin clients, able to run only a few programs locally, with most software needing to run remotely from a server.
