Quest Software Acquires Provision Networks
Tuesday, 13 November 2007 by Michel Roth
Quest Software, a company relatively unknown in the application delivery market space has acquired Provision Networks, traditionally one of Citrix' biggest competitors.

I don't know whether to be happy or sad. On the on hand I'm sorry to see a small, dynamic company like Provision Networks being assimilated by something bigger, with Quest potentially bleeding the SBC part of Provision Networks out. On the other hand Quest could use their size and reputation to give Provision Networks the boost it needs to go places.

Quest isn't a stranger to acquisitions by the way. Besides the more recent acquisitions they did recently like Vizioncore and Invirtus check out some of the companies they bought over the last couple of years:

• November 3, 1999: MBR Technologies (change management and version control software solutions)
• January 10, 2000: Foglight (Application Performance Monitoring)
• September 5, 2001: Revealnet (Knowledge Base products and Internet technical communities)
• October 23, 2002: Sitraka (Java based application-server performance management)
• March 18, 2004: Aelita Software (Systems management solutions for Active Directory and Exchange)
• May 23, 2005: Imceda Software (Backup and recovery solutions for SQL Server)
• July 12, 2005: Vintela (Password Management solutions)
• January 5, 2006: Aftermail (email archiving)
• June 26, 2007: ScriptLogic (Desktop and server Management solutions)

So now they've added Provision Networks to that list. I've been watching Provision Networks lately and they've done a very good job in positioning themselves and their products in regards to the whole VDI wave. They've approached it kind of from the view like "We know Server Based Computing, VDI isn't that much different so why make a big deal out of it? You know we know SBC so we show we know VDI as well". Or something like that...

Anyway, fact of the matter is that I like Provision Networks' style. Or should I say liked their style? Like I said, I'm not sure if this is a good development for the application delivery industry. Brian Madden seems to think so. I think it really depends on what Quest actually does with Provision Networks.

Quest is a company that historically is known for their enterprise management tools, especially in the AD market space. In June they bought a company called ScriptLogic which main product was one that allows (amongst other things) for easy configuration of user environments. They had a fair amount of customers in the Windows based SBC market. So Quest kind of stepped out from infrastructure management to user environment management. With Provision Networks they're stepping even further out into the application delivery space.

I'm sure that this acquisition has been done from the "virtualization angle". Face it, Virtualization is hot. This might not seem to apply to Provision Networks per say but if you take into account that "applications on a Terminal Server" has become "presentation virtualization" and that Provision Networks supports almost every single virtual platform vendor (VMware, Virtual Iron, SWsoft Virtuozzo, XenSource and Microsoft Virtual Server) then I might make some more sense.

VDI is even hotter, redhot even. And Provision Networks is one of the parties that really gets VDI as far as I'm concerned. Considering Quest is a Microsoft buff (ISV Partner 2007) Provision Networks technologies will probably be leveraged to offer management capabilities that add value to Microsoft's virtualization portfolio. Citrix was ISV Partner 2005. I wonder whether that will be a taste of irony in five years or so...

If Quest recognizes the value that Provision Networks has in their approach in Application Delivery and they do not keep them on too tight of a leech then this acquisition might prove to be the beginning of a bright future for Provision Networks, or Provision Networks' technology actually.
