Running At High Resolutions And Using RDP? Use The RDP6 Client!
Sunday, 14 January 2007 by Michel Roth
In my home I have several computers. Since I don't want to have multiple monitors, I decided to have one monitor and use RDP to access my other computers. For my monitor I decided on the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP (which is brilliant by the way.)

Now here was my problem. I have this great monitor that has a native resolution of 1920x1200. However, when I used RDP to get access to my laptop and set my RDP client to full-screen I ended up with a 1600x1200 screen. No I had this big monitor and I wasn't using it to it's full extent. When I thought about it, it all made perfect sense: RDP has a maximum resolution of 1600x1200. Now I of course know that Citrix can handle resolutions larger than that but that wasn't an option for me (especially since ICA for Windows XP -PortICA- is not out yet).

So this week, when I was upgrading my system to use the new RDP 6.0 client, I noticed that connecting via RDP to my laptop now resulted in a nice 1920x1200 session! I was rather surprised because I was under the assumption that the maximum resolution would be determined by the Terminal Services engine ( my Windows XP laptop ) but this did not seem to be the case. I think that somewhere in the new RDP 6 client the video buffers got enlarged and make it possible to use RDP in large resolution environments!
