Updated: Microsoft Moves Graphics Outside OS Kernel In Windows Vista: Possibilities For Terminal Ser

Update: Microsoft has denied the change in Windows described below...

Interesting architectural change in Windows Vista:

Vista's graphics subsystem, codenamed Avalon and formally known as the Windows Presentation Foundation, will be pulled out the kernel because many lock-ups are the result of the GUI freezing, Microsoft infrastructure architect Giovanni Marchetti told Techworld exclusively yesterday.

This will create new possibilities for enabling Terminal Server environments for graphics-intensive applications. Citrix probably already knew about this because at this year's iForum they announced project Ocelot which focuses on extreme graphics acceleration.

Running outside of Kernel mode could also create performance issues which are inherent to running in user mode. I wonder how this will be dealt with.

Anyway, this is an interesting development to follow and I'm sure that there's a lot to be said about this.
