VDI on VMware Infrastructure 3
Wednesday, 14 November 2007 by Michel Roth
Scott Lowe has written two articles on the subject of VDI on VMware Infrastructure 3. In this first article he describes the main components and in the second article he zooms in on the Connection Broker.

Al though I do not agree on all terms with Scott, the first article provides a nice overview of the three main components in a VDI on VMware Infrastructure 3, being:

• The virtualization servers and supporting infrastructure (VI3)
• The hosted operating system instances (Windows XP or Vista)
• The connection broker ( the VMware / Propero one )

In the second article Scott zooms in on the Connection Broker "role". He describes the different tasks it (typically) has:

• Virtual machine management
• Pool creation and management
• Network connectivity
• Policy assignment and enforcement

These articles are worth reading. Scott is planning on publishing more articles about VDI on VI3 discussing the details of how the connection broker integrates into some of the VDI components and how those details affect a VDI implementation, so keep an eye out.
