WM Software Releases ShutdownPlus Rolling Restart 7.0
Thursday, 21 February 2008 by Michel Roth
What a name huh? But the name says it all. WM Software has just released version 7.0 of their ShutdownPlus Rolling Restart. This tool is specifically Terminal Server maintanence (rebooting) in enterprise environments.

It might sound a bit weird to create a product that focuses on a seemingly trivial task like rebooting but it's not weird. Those of us that have been working in Enterprise SBC environments long enough know that it really takes some effort to get this right. This is where ShutdownPlus Rolling Restart v. 7.0 might be able to help you. ShutdownPlus Rolling Restart v. 7.0 is an application that automatically logs off users and restarts terminal servers on a round-robin schedule. The program uses a hub-and-spoke model. Select one server as the controller or hub, and it will restart all of the member (spoke) servers, with no need for the network administrator to touch the member servers.

ShutdownPlus Rolling Restart works very well when in 24x7 environments where servers need to be restarted. A common configuration for ShutdownPlus Rolling Restart is a load-balanced farm of multiple servers running the same group of applications.

The program provides a centrally managed solution for standardized terminal server restarts. There's no need for administrators to spend time scheduling server restarts around users' time commitments.

Simply choose which servers to restart, and each selected server will restart, in succession. Users will receive a notification that their server will be restarting. Users can be forced to logoff immediately, or after a defined time. Before a member server is restarted, logons are disabled on the member server; the member server waits until all users are logged off before it is restarted.

The program keeps track of which servers restarted and which did not.  The program can retry restarting any servers that were skipped or that did not restart. In Silent Mode, the program will restart terminal servers without affecting users.

ShutdownPlus Rolling Restart runs on all versions of Microsoft Windows server operating systems, including Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 Server, and Windows NT4 Terminal Server Edition. It is fully compatible with third-party software from Citrix, Tarantella, and Jetro.

ShutdownPlus Rolling Restart v. 7.0 is licensed per server, with prices beginning at $245(US). Free trials and more information available at WMSoftware.com.
