Quest has acquired RemoteScan. With RemoteScan Quest, the Desktop Virtualization Group in particular, will be able to provide its customers with market-leading technology in connecting scanning and imaging devices to remote desktop sessions.
If you've never heard of RemoteScan, then you probably don't have any scanners or imaging devices you need to support via VDI or Terminal Server. 🙂 That's basically all they do. They have a client plug-in that makes your scanners work with ICA, RDP. (It works with TWAIN and WIA scanners.) While Citrix has had basic TWAIN redirection for years, using it still means you have to have all the proper scanner drivers installed on your remote hosts. RemoteScan, on the other hand, could be thought of more like a tool that "virtualizes" scanners, allowing any scanner to work with any remote host.
I last used RemoteScan back in 2009 when I attempted to use RDP-only for as long as I could. I had a problem with my business card scanner that RemoteScan addressed. Check out my review from back then. (Scroll down to "3. Scanner doesn't work." We also talked about it on Brian Madden TV #16.)
Quest has confirmed that they'll continue to sell the RemoteScan products on their own, and they're considering their options for existing vWorkspace customers.
More information about the deal are available at quest.com/remotescan. Also, Quest employee Michel Roth written a blog post with more technical details about RemoteScan's products.
